Disability Artistry

People with disabilities make up the largest minority group in the world, yet they are the most underrepresented in the theatre industry (both on and off stage). Join Alie B. Gorrie and Kate Trammell for a 2 hour workshop as we break down the best essentials of accessible and inclusive hiring practices for artists and arts administrators with disabilities. Learn how to create an inclusive environment and hiring process where PWDs feel a sense of true belonging. If you are looking to hire more disabled artists, creatives, or arts administrators, this workshop is for you.

Participants of this workshop will listen to a panel of disabled theatre practitioners with artistic and administration backgrounds. In break out rooms, everyone will have a chance to brainstorm how to use these best practices in either an audition or interview situation with the workshop's presenters. In order to lower the estimated 85% unemployment rate within the disability community, we need helpful advocates across the boards. Come ready and willing to ask questions on how to make accessible hiring practices a reality.

Alie B. Gorrie is an actor, advocate, and disability inclusion consultant. Past projects include running Inclusive Audition Room workshops for the National Alliance for Musical Theatre, A.R.T./New York, and RWS and Associates. Recent consulting clients include Poster House, theatreC, Red Mountain Theatre Company, Alabama Conference of Theatre, and Motivated Movers NYC. Alie B. is the creator of ABLE, a documentary series discussing disability inclusion in theatre, film, and television. For more, visit www.aliebgorrie.com.

Kate Trammell is an arts administrator, educator, and Aspergirl based in New York City. She earned her Master of Arts degree in Educational Theatre from New York University. She has been featured on the “WellAttended” podcast, Teaching Artist Journal, and On The Spectrum. In addition to working in various theatre spaces as an artist and educator, she consults with various government and non-profit theatre organizations on best web accessibility practices and identifying administration job skills for young adults with various disabilities.
