A.R.T./New York & The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Announce The Recipients Of The New York Theater Program (NYTP)

NEW YORK CITY,
July 23rd — The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) in partnership with The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation announce the recipients of the New York Theater Program (NYTP) for the July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2022 funding cycle. A total of $4,001,000 in general operating support will be distributed over three years to 36 New York-based theatrical organizations. This funding comes at a crucial time, providing multi-year, unrestricted funding for organizational sustainability, capacity building, and growth for small and mid-size organizations with budgets of $50,000 to $3,000,000 annually.

Established in 1997 by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the New York Theater Program works to strengthen and support the development and presentation of work by small and mid-sized theater producers, development labs, and ensembles through impactful general operating grants. Since its inception, the program has awarded more than $29 million in funding. “Small and midsized New York City-based theater organizations’ are vitally important as a source for the creation and dissemination of new repertory for theaters throughout the United States. The Mellon Foundation has been committed to this sector through the New York Theater Program for more than 20 years and we are grateful to ART/NY for their partnership in assembling so diverse and stellar a group of grantees from a highly competitive applicant pool,” said Susan Feder, program officer at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s Arts and Cultural Heritage program.

As a prestigious and indispensable source of general operating funding for the nonprofit theatre community in New York City, the New York Theater Program is the most extensive and competitive grant program offered by A.R.T./New York to date. “For many of these companies, this is their first time receiving support from a national foundation. It's a massive endorsement of their work, and it speaks to the tenet that you can be strategically small and still have an impact on the field. The New York Theatre Program reinforces what A.R.T./New York has been about since its inception,” said Ginny Louloudes, Executive Director of A.R.T./New York.

A.R.T./New York’s administration of the New York Theater Program aims to support companies who are impacting the field both locally and nationally, that work with intentionality and integrity in the creation of their work, and who are making work that is relevant to the theatrical field and cultural conversation more broadly. “From the beginning of our work on the New York Theater Program, we were interested in how to create a program that was accessible, transparent, and intentional, that could provide companies with deep support in the application process, and that included many different perspectives in the decision making process to fund a vibrant mix of theatres across New York City” said Corinne Woods, A.R.T./New York's Director of Programs.

The thirty-six theatre companies funded this cycle were chosen by a panel of theatre professionals, following an auditing period where seventeen auditors (consisting of theatre-makers, administrators, and artists) attended and reviewed the work of over one-hundred and fifty companies. The grantees represent a blend of respected institutions and an emerging new generation of theaters, with work varying from devised ensembles to theatres for young audiences, from organizations dedicated to cultivating new theatrical works, to companies fostering community though theatre, thus making them crucial contributors to the vigorous, dynamic, relevant, diverse, and accessible performing arts sector in New York.
