2018 Snow Storm Cancellations

Dear Members,

 

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Our first winter storm appears to be a doozy!

Governor Cuomo has issued a state of emergency but as of now, the trains are running with delays. As you all know the wind is making travel difficult. The storm is supposed to end this evening, and perhaps by then the trains will have improved. We will keep you updated as we learn of any changes to transportation or if the storm track changes.

A.R.T./New York is sharing member theatre show cancellations on our website, you can find them here. Please send your cancellations and other information you'd like to share to Membership and Communications Manager Kati Frazier, [email protected].

We'll also be sharing official information from the city, state, and MTA and will update as news changes. Until then, be safe and take care. While I am hoping for the best, let's be prepared for whatever the weather brings.

According to the National Weather Service

Heavy snow and blowing snow occurring. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph will cause areas of blowing and drifting snow. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the morning commute. Tree branches could fall as well. Snowfall rates of around 1 inch per hour are expected this morning into early afternoon. Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches are expected.

The MTA is expecting delays on several train lines, and will maintain operations to the best of their abilities.

The MTA has announced that all aboveground subway stations will close at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, meaning that service will only run underground. For information about other possible MTA changes and closings tomorrow, look here.

12:45pm:

In its 4 a.m. Monday update, the Weather Service upgraded its blizzard watch to a blizzard warning, and said the most likely snow total for New York City was 20 inches, which would break a 129-year record for March. Meteorologists said to expect a minimum of 11 inches, and as much as 23 inches of snow.

Mayor de Blasio announced on Monday that schools would be shut down on Tuesday.

For the first time this year, the Department of Sanitation is deploying its full snow-fighting force, starting with 689 salt spreaders across the five boroughs.

The city’s Emergency Management Department has already issued a hazardous travel advisory, urging New Yorkers to avoid the roads and to take public transit.

  • Tuesday, March 14 performances of White Guy on the Bus at 7p.m and Sam & Dede at 7.30 at 59E59 Theaters have been cancelled. Ticket holders should check their email and/or contact the point of purchase for information on exchanges and refunds.
  • Ars Nova's SUNDOWN, YELLOW MOON will play as scheduled tonight, and we have released a special snow-day discount: Code SNOWGO will get folks buy one, get one free tix to tonight & tomorrow’s 7pm performances.
  • Barrow Street Theatre's Sweeney Todd is cancelled tonight on 3/14
  • Epic Theatre Ensemble's Education Benefit, scheduled for Tuesday, March 14th has been postponed because of the impending snow storm. 
  • Keen Company's When It's You is cancelled for Tuesday 3/14
  • New York Theatre Workshop's The Object Lesson is cancelled on 3/14
  • The Playwrights Realm has cancelled The Moors tomorrow, Tues 3/14
  • The Public Theater and Joe's Pub have cancelled all performances
  • SITI Company's CHESS MATCH NO. 5 will not be performed on Tuesday, March 14 at 7pm at Abingdon Theatre Company (312 West 36th Street)
  • Victory Theatre's Kid Victory is cancelled on 3/14

Town Hall Takeaways

Dear Members,

On Monday, December 19th, A.R.T./New York held a Post Election Town Hall Meeting. The full video of the event is above and you can find the program here. Our distinguished panelists included:

  • Congressman Jerrold Nadler
  • City Council Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer
  • Earl Lewis, President of the Andrew W.Mellon Foundation and co-author of "Our Compelling Interests";
  • Bruce Gyory, professor and political strategist who is of Counsel to Manatt, Phelos and Phillips;
  • Lameece Issaq, Artistic Director of Noor Theatre Company; and
  • Lauren Wainwright, Managing Director of Tectonic Theatre Company

 There were several "Takeaways" from the Panel:

  1. The Affordable Care Act Is complex and dismantling it will take a long time.  Yes, it is flawed, but with 2 million people signed up for the exchange-many who voted for President-Elect Trump - it will be impossible to create something better that is also more affordable without increasing taxes.
    Yet as I write this Congress is swiftly moving to dismantle the ACA.  No one is quite sure how this will play out.
  2. There is documented proof that equal access to education leads to a more equitable access to college and greater earning power among people of various races;
  3. There has been a spike in hate crime since the election.  Muslims, Jews and the LGBTQ community are primary targets.

For me, the most important "takeaway" was Jimmy Van Bramer's call for us to become politically active in support of the values we hold so dear that are under threat.  He urged us to go to our Community Board Meetings and even consider running for office.

In his Farewell Address on Tuesday evening, President Obama made the same argument:

"George Washington wrote that self-government   is the underpinning of our safety, prosperity, and liberty, but “from different causes and from different quarters much pains will be taken... to weaken in your minds the conviction of this truth...."

 

It falls to each of us to be those anxious, jealous guardians of our democracy. Embrace the joyous task we have been given to continually try to improve this great nation of ours because, for all our outward differences, we in fact all share the same proud type, the most important office in a democracy, citizen."

As your advocate, I look forward to working with you to become more active and engaged Citizens!
