Save the Date! A.R.T./New York Community Forum — Seeking Alternatives — October 27th-29th, 2025

Happy Spring, folks!
Usually this time of year comes with a lot of optimism, but this year we know that simply changing the clocks and having more light in the evening won’t ease all of our heaviness. The challenges we are facing – nationally, locally, and within our field – are real, and don’t have easy solutions. We are in solidarity with our colleagues and peers engaging in resistance and organizing at many levels.
The last few months have been chaotic to say the least, and we understand it can feel overwhelming and tricky to know where to direct your advocacy efforts and how to make the most impact with your voice. Advocating for increased, equitable and transparent funding for the arts takes all of us. Especially in this climate of heightened volatility, we all need to focus on what we can control and join coalitions to further our goals. A.R.T./New York is honored to be your partner in advocating for New York theatremakers, but we all have a role to play!
Below you'll find some advocacy resources and actionable steps you can take immediately. We welcome and encourage your participation in whatever way feels feasible for you.
A.R.T./New York is pleased to announce a high-impact data and research initiative designed to help us better serve our organizational and individual members, while also leveraging our membership’s insights and experiences to provide stronger support for our sector.
As you know, over the past three years, the theatre industry has been tremendously impacted by both the acute and ongoing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. A.R.T./New York’s member theatres continue to face unprecedented challenges including increased supply costs, evolving audience trends, work to provide better wages, and labor scarcity. In recent years, A.R.T./New York has also undergone our own significant transformation, reforming our operating practices and organizational structure to align with our values and to prepare us to meet the emergent needs of those we serve. Our staff, leadership, and operations now support our ability to further focus on understanding and responding to the unique and evolving needs of the field.

ABOUT A.R.T./NEW YORK
(October 18, 2021 - New York, NY) The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York) (Risa Shoup,Interim Executive Director) announced today two regrant opportunities for theatres in New York City (the New York City Small Theatres Fund and the Strengthening NYC Theatres Grant), as well as a regrant for theatres throughout New York State (the NYSCA-A.R.T./New York Creative Opportunity Fund).
Combined, these grants are some of the only general operating support funding available to small theatres in New York City/New York State. NYSCA is very cognizant of the role that NYC-based theaters play in the local and national theater ecosystem and is focused on ensuring that upstate theaters are aware of and applying for the Creative Opportunity Fund. Their investment in this program is meant to create a statewide impact and ensure that all New York state residents have access to theater in their local community.
