Seeking Alternatives

10.27.25 - 10.29.25

Autumn is once again upon us and so is A.R.T./New York’s 5th convening! This special multi-day event is a time for building relationships, collective learning and skill-building, and sharing resources, and specially designed to meet the needs of the NYC theatre community as they stand now.

“Together we must catalyze new approaches and reinvent the ways we work…release fear and reject the methods and structures that no longer serve you; trust your instincts and find bold new approaches to rethink how you govern, fundraise, and plan for the future.”
- Health + Wealth: Empowering NYC Theatremakers Through Data

As we continue to navigate what has been an extremely tumultuous few years for the arts and culture sectors, we as theatremakers find ourselves in what seems to be a constant state of transition and adapting.

Guided by our findings from the Health+Wealth Report and in response to the needs of our theatremaking community, A.R.T./New York has chosen Seeking Alternatives as the theme for the upcoming convening!

To us this means...

  • Seeking opportunities for shared strategy, labor, space, and expertise,
  • Recognizing when old systems simply don’t work anymore,
  • Investing in the partnerships, collaborations, and networks that make our work more resilient and sustainable,
  • And creating conditions for brave change!

Some of the topics to be explored in this year’s convening will include workforce solutions around hiring interim & part-time workers, expanding inclusive hiring practices, welcoming audiences with disabilities, producing for festivals, AND a special sneak peak into Next Stage — a brand-new A.R.T./NY initiative dedicated to supporting bold, strategic decisions for organizations at inflection points.

 REGISTRATION

In order to create the most meaningful connections possible, we sincerely hope you will be able to join us in person. We are committed to providing the support necessary to make that possible. However, we recognize that in-person attendance may not be an option for everyone, so three key moments of the Community Forum will also be live-streamed in partnership with Howlround and Transcend Streaming. When registering, you’ll have the option to indicate that you would like to receive links to view the live stream.

For in-person attendance, A.R.T./New York will have masks available for participants if desired.

To streamline the registration process, there is only ONE registration form for all events.

On the registration form, you will be able to:

  • Choose which individual events you would like to attend,
  • Request additional accessibility accommodations,
  • Indicate whether you would like to receive links to view the live-streamed events, and
  • Tell us how we can best support you if you are a caregiver planning to attend.

ACCESSIBILITY

All programming on Wednesday October 29th will be live-streamed and will include ASL interpretation and live CART captioning for both virtual and in-person attendees.

All portions of the Summit will include

  • Live CART Captioning
  • Large print versions of any printed materials and
  • Identifiable staff for wayfinding support.

Additional accommodations for all programs are available upon request, including:

We kindly ask that requests for additional accommodations are submitted by Tuesday, October 21, 2025. You may request accommodations directly on the registration form, or by contacting Ashley J. Hicks at [email protected]. We understand that this is not an exhaustive list, so if you have questions or if there is anything else we might be able to provide in order to make our programming accessible to you, we’d love to hear from you.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT

  • We realize that in-person attendance can be a larger lift for caregivers in our community. With that in mind, we are pleased to offer stipends to help offset the cost of hiring caregiver support. You can let us know on the registration form if you’d like to request one of these stipends, and we will email you to begin a conversation. These stipends are limited, but we will do our best to fulfill all requests

  • We know that theatre administration isn’t the most interesting topic for young people, but children are welcome to attend any portion of the Community Forum alongside an adult. You can let us know on the registration form if any children will be attending with you, and we’ll reach out to see what kid-friendly activities (coloring books, crayons, etc.) we can have on hand. We’re happy to chat about what we could do to make the experience fun for everyone. On 10/28 and 10/29 in the Spaces@520 there are also convenient side rooms in each studio that could serve as a “homework office.”

  • A dedicated lactation space is available at A.R.T./New York’s Spaces@520.
