Nonprofit Theatres Offer Free Tickets to Government Workers During Shutdown
Thursday, January 24, 2019 12:00 AM

Nonprofit Theatres Offer FREE Tickets to Government Workers and Their Families During the Shutdown.

My Fair Lady, Anne of Green Gables and Recent Alien Abductions are among the shows offered.

In an effort to provide a little respite for Government Workers during the fifth week of the Federal Government Shutdown, the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York (A.R.T./New York), the leading organization for New York City’s nonprofit theatres, has arranged FREE tickets for government workers with several of its member companies.

The offerings are a diverse range of shows: My Fair Lady at Lincoln Center Theater; Broken Box Mime’s Skin, at the Jeffrey & Paula Gural Theatre at A.R.T./New York Theatres; New York City Children's Theater’s Pillowland at the Flea Theater; Trick or Treat at 59E59 Theatres; New Ohio Theatre’s NY Indie Theatre Film Festival; and The Play Company’s Recent Alien Abductions.

There’s even a play about politics. Metropolitan Playhouse is offering free tickets to the 1946 Pulitzer Prize Winning Play State of the Union by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. The play centers on a Presidential Candidate who says what is on his mind despite what his advisors think, all while on the road with his wife AND mistress!

“So many of us feel helpless about the government shutdown,” said Virginia P. Louloudes, A.R.T./New York’s Executive Director. “By providing workers with a few hours of compelling theatre, we hope we can show our appreciation to the federal workers who do so much for us.”

Founded in 1972, A.R.T./New York assists member theatres in managing their companies effectively so they may realize their rich artistic visions and serve their diverse audiences well. Over the past 40 years, A.R.T./New York has earned a reputation as a leader in providing progressive services to its members–from grants to cash-flow and real estate loans to technical assistance programs for our member theatres.

A.R.T./New York also launches strategic initiatives to tackle systemic issues in the field that are too large for any one theatre company to take on themselves. For example, they opened the A.R.T./New York Theatres in January 2017 to address the space crisis currently facing artists. They have implemented new programs, like Access A.R.T./New York, which trains ASL interpreters for theatres and provides workshops and subsidies to make performances accessible for audiences with different levels of ability; and Body Autonomy, which tackles sexual assault in theatre by providing a mediation program, classes on HR best practices, and micro-grants to support the hiring of intimacy choreographers.

Free tickets will be offered to government workers until the end of the government shutdown. Below is a list of participating theaters and productions, including instructions for reserving tickets.
