We're here to help you make theatre. A.R.T./New York provides vital services and benefits to a community of 400+ member theatres and producers. All programs and services are free of charge or subsidized for A.R.T./New York members.

Once application and payment is received, memberships are typically approved within 1-2 weeks.

Membership Categories

A.R.T./New York offers 5 types of membership: Full, Independent Producer, Incubator, Non-Profit Professional Affiliates, and Business AffiliatesPlease review the eligibility requirements below to determine which category you or your organization falls into. If you are confused, try this flowchart.

When applying for membership and/or renewing each year, you will pay annual dues based on your membership category. These go to providing the resources you can take full advantage of as a member—workshops and roundtables, grant applications, subsidized studio space, and more. Applications will not be approved until your dues have been received.

 

Eligibility Requirements for All Theatrical Membership Categories (Excluding Professional Affiliates):

    • Must have 501(c)3 status, fiscal sponsorship, or be nonprofit in spirit. 
    • Must not charge artists (including playwrights, actors, designers, and directors) to participate in the organizations' theatrical productions. Members may charge fees only for classes and training programs that are dissociated from theatre productions.
    • Must self-produce in New York City.

Full Membership

The majority of A.R.T./New York members are full members and have access to all benefits. Full members must be a professional theatrical producing organization with performances open to the general public.

Annual Dues: 

Full members are organized into tiers based on budget size, which also determine how much in annual dues are required.

$900 - Tier 1A (Budget over $5 million)
$800 - Tier 1B (Budget between $1 million and $5 million) 
$485 - Tier 2 (Budget between $500,000 and $999,999)  
$225 - Tier 3 (Budget between $100,000 and $499,999)  
$160 - Tier 4 (Budget under $100,000)

Independent Producer Membership

An Independent Producer is one individual who creates theatre that is nonprofit in spirit or operates under fiscal sponsorship. If producing with a team or group, please consider full membership.

Independent Producers have access to the majority of A.R.T./New York benefits. Learn more »

Incubator Membership

Incubator members are brand new companies interested in joining the A.R.T./New York community but are still in the process of forming.

Incubator membership is only valid for one year. At the end of that year, members may renew as a Full Member but cannot continue their Incubator membership. 

Incubator members have access to limited benefits of A.R.T./New York membership, including professional development and subsidized space opportunities. Learn more »

Eligibility

  • Identify as new or in the process of forming, without 501(c)3 status at the time of application
  • Must not have an annual budget exceeding $100,000

: $50

Professional Affiliates

Professional Affiliates may include colleges and universities, theatres outside of New York City, dance and music companies, presenting organizations, and theatre-related businesses. Professional Affiliates are divided into two categories: Nonprofit Professional Affiliates and Business Affiliates

Non-Profit Professional Affiliates

Must have nonprofit status (501c3), fiscal sponsorship, or be nonprofit in spirit.
