Disability 101

Wednesday, January 13, 2021
2:00pm - 4:00pm EST

Location: Zoom
Intended Audience: Beginner level
Participation Level: High - Discussion-based workshop

Come join us in an inclusive conversation about the basics of disability culture. Learn from the experiences of actress, teaching artist, and disability advocate Sofiya Cheyenne. Come with questions, come with curiosity! This is not a lecture type workshop, but rather an invitation to create change and be an ally. Sofiya will actively ask participants to contribute to the conversation and together we will build a safe and brave space. Not only will we learn from the questions and experiences shared, but we will work towards creating action and forward thinking around language, culture, access, and advocacy.

Sofiya Cheyenne is a New York-based multi-disciplinary actress, teaching artist, and disability advocate/consultant. Sofiya is an associate consultant with a focus on inclusion and equity at Penn Creative Strategy. With over 20 years of personal advocating experience, Sofiya has been a facilitator, public speaker, and panelist at many schools, venues, and conferences across the country to speak on issues of access and inclusion. As a Teaching Artist, Sofiya has worked with many nonprofit organizations including Girl Be Heard and The New Victory Theatre. She also leads her own social justice programming with the youth where she uses drama therapy, storytelling, and hands-on approaches to tackle implicit bias and systemic oppression. She is on the Board of Trustees for the Access Champions Podcast and the Committee Chair for the Dwarf Artist Coalition of Little People of America. She received her BFA & BA in Psychology from CUNY Brooklyn College.
