Budgeting for Grant Proposals

Thursday, January 21, 2021
12:00pm - 2:30pm EST

Location: Zoom
Intended Audience: Beginner/Intermediate level. Geared toward small theatres with limited administrative staff.
Participation Level: High - Breakout rooms will be utilized for small group work

When drafting a grant application, your budget is as important as your narrative. Led by A.R.T./New York’s Director of Programs Corinne Woods, this workshop will look at how to build your budget documents for a grant application in advance of the closing of the 2021 Creative Opportunity Fund. We’ll review both the budget itself (project and organizational) and budget notes, talk about budget terminology, and discuss how to move information into funder provided templates.

And with the ongoing uncertainty of the theatre field, drafting budgets and associated documents for the future can be incredibly challenging. We’ll discuss strategies for talking about uncertainties in your budget documents, and how to use your budget to extend the story you are telling through the rest of your narrative and application.

The workshop will be a mixture of instruction and small group hands-on work in breakout rooms. A portion of this workshop will involve hands-on preparing budget documents for a grant, and we will be using the 2021 Creative Opportunity Fund as our example. Participants are welcome to bring a copy of their theatre’s budget to work off of if they would like.

Corinne Woods is the Director of Programs for A.R.T./New York where she oversees all of A.R.T./New York's programming including grantmaking and loans. She has worked extensively with a variety of NYC nonprofit theatres in general management, production management, and producing. Occasionally, she directs new queer plays under the theatre company not without rage. She is not afraid of numbers and has ushered multiple small organizations into more stable, organized, and formal financial systems. (And she loves budget notes!)

All A.R.T./New York workshops, roundtables, and trainings feature automated captioning provided by Zoom. ASL interpretation and CART captioning services are available by request; requests must be made at least 5 business days before the event. For requests, accessibility information, or other accommodations please contact Kirsten Sweeney at [email protected]
