First 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance

This year we commemorate the first September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. The tragic events of September 11, 2001 inspired Americans to come together in a remarkable spirit of unity and compassion. It was a stark reminder that our fate as individuals is inherently tied to the fate of our nation. Eight years later, September 11 continues to evoke strong emotion and is an homage to sacrifice and a call to action.

In April, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act which, for the first time, officially recognizes September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. This year, on September 11, the President, the Corporation for National and Community Service, MyGoodDeed, and the 9/11 families will ask all Americans to remember that Tuesday eight years ago and recommit to service in their communities throughout the year. We encourage you to continue to promote service by commemorating this milestone through the United We Serve initiative.

Need Housing?

In response to the need for housing for entertainment professionals, The Actors Fund, in partnership with Common Ground Community, has built Schermerhorn House, a 217 unit residence for single adults in the heart of downtown Brooklyn and including 100 studio apartments with a preference for those working in performing arts and entertainment.

Each newly constructed apartment has a private bath and kitchen and the building includes 24/7 security, laundry, fitness room, computer lab, special programs including workshops and support groups, and a rooftop garden. Soon to open is a 2,000 square foot state-of-the-art performance space/multipurpose room for rehearsals, performances, screenings and exhibitions. The "green" building is also home to the Brooklyn Ballet.

Monthly rent starts at $635 and eligibility is based on Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit guidelines. Click here for more information and for an application. You can also visit the Schermerhorn House section of The Actors Fund website at: http://www.actorsfund.org/Schermerhorn_House.
